Nanobionic has developed two new coatings called Nanobionic Green and Sanitize System. Jessica Owen reports.
The Nanobionic Group specialises in developing coatings and finishes for textiles that help to ‘empower and enhance the body’s energy’. The company’s original patented coating uses minerals to transform body heat into far infrared rays (FIRs) and reflect them back into the body, which helps to improve blood flow and energise the user.
Now, the company has launched two other coatings, the first being Nanobionic Green which is a more sustainable version of the original Nanobionic coating.
“The purpose of Nanobionic Green is to bring to the market a sustainable solution that will have all Nanobionic benefits but at the same time, will have a positive impact on the environment,” says Ermis Psipsikas, founder and COO, Nanobionic Group.
While the manufacturing and production process remains very similar, the difference between Nanobionic Green and the original is that 50% of this new development contains materials derived from renewable or vegetal sources, which helps to reduce the product’s carbon footprint.
“Nanobionic is conscious of our carbon footprint and using biobased polymers as an alternative, reduces this,” Psipsikas explains.
“The introduction of biobased polymers in textiles finishing, and the consequent reduction in fossil resource consumption, is a key step in transitioning to a circular sustainable economy.”
Elsewhere, the company’s other development is called Sanitize System. This is another mineral-based coating, but it has been found to reduce viruses on the surface of vehicle interiors.
Studies conducted in Germany at the Institute of Hygiene and Microbiology evaluated the virus-inactivating efficacy on leather with the Nanobionic coating against the modified Vaccinia Ankara (MVA) virus and found that the Nanobionic Sanitize System coating, in collaboration with heated seats or a steering wheel, showed that the treatment significantly reduced and inactivated the virus on the surface by 65.3%.
What’s more, the heat retaining properties of the Nanobionic coating applied to leather, fabric, vinyl and artificial leather, have shown to increase heating up the car’s seats and steering wheel faster, thus becoming more energy efficient. In a quantitative test, the Nanobionic coating showed an 81% improvement in heat-retaining properties in regular fabric, and 150% for the front side and 178% for the back side of leather.
“We knew that viruses are inactivated when they are exposed to high temperatures,” says Psipsikas. “So, we developed our new technology that works in collaboration with heated seats. Thanks to the minerals, there is a reduction of the viruses within 30 minutes.”
The coating can be applied by spraying, printing or padding on air application on the back side of the leather, fabric or artificial leather. It can be applied with the fabric in rolls or leather as large pieces.
