Chemosvit Fibrochem, a global leader in the production of ecological polypropylene yarns Prolen®, has received confirmation of antiviral activity against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 with a reduction of more than 99% according to ISO 18184: 2019 for Prolen Bodyfresh and antiviral reduction for yarns Prolen Siltex, Prolen Zen and Prolen Zeo from two independent laboratories, Virology Research Services Ltd (UK) and the Institute of Biomedicine of Slovak Academy of Sciences (SR).

In addition, antiviral activity against influenza A sub-type H1N1 was confirmed for three types of Prolen yarns with a reduction of more than 99% of the virus by the laboratory of Microbiological Solutions Ltd (UK).

Polypropylene yarn Prolen is treated with antimicrobial and antiviral additives, which are anchored in the polymer mass, thus ensuring permanent treatment, providing lasting and effective protection, reducing unpleasant odours, ensuring hygienic freshness and cleanliness, and reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

Prolen yarns are used in the production of various medical products

“Prolen Siltex and Prolen Bodyfresh antimicrobial modified yarns have been produced by Chemosvit Fibrochem since 1998 and are successfully sold worldwide,” says executive director Alena Balogová. “Until the Covid-19 pandemic, only antibacterial (> 99% reduction of E. coli, Staphyloccocus, Klebsiella) and antifungal efficacy (growth inhibition in Aspergillus Niger) have been tested. Antiviral activity has been proved just in 2020, although we have predicted this activity from a number of studies and literature.”

These modified Prolen yarns are used in the production of various medical products, which are intended primarily as barrier protection for healthcare professionals and patients, but also as protection for the civilian population during local or global pandemics.

The production of polypropylene yarns is environmentally friendly compared to some other synthetic yarns

“With proven antiviral properties, our customers can produce new safe and environmentally friendly functional products with an increased degree of protection,” says Balogová.

“At the same time, they can take advantage of polypropylene properties such as zero moisture absorption, sweat transfer, thermal insulation properties, colourfastness (without migration of pigments and dyes into skin, such as surface-dyed fibres), lightness and high durability. These multifunctional properties of our yarns are mainly used in thermal baselayers, underwear, socks and clothing for active athletes.”

Prolen also offers the other desirable properties associated with polypropylene including zero moisture absorption and sweat transfer etc

Chemosvit Fibrochem has been producing and developing Prolen polypropylene yarns since 1974, exporting over 95% of its production worldwide. Its clients are major well-known sports brands, manufacturers from the medical, furniture, food, military, and aeronautical sectors, as well as development companies in the field of composites for the automotive and sports industries. “Practically our fibres are used in all applications of everyday life,” says Balogová.

The production of polypropylene yarns is one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable productions compared to other synthetic and natural fibres. Prolen yarn products thus guarantee high quality, durability and an environmentally responsible attitude of every end user.
