Konrad Beretitsch, director of sales, systems & components at MS Ultraschall, tells Jessica Owen about the company’s intention to become stronger in other activities in the ultrasonic business.

Jessica Owen (JO): What is MS Ultraschall Technologie exhibiting at INDEXTM20?

Konrad Beretitsch (KB): MS Ultrasonic Technology Group is exhibiting its brand new, sophisticated joining and laminating ultrasonic systems for the nonwovens sector, launched under the name MS sonxSYS COMBINE.

JO: Are you approaching the event differently because it has been postponed?

KB: The planning for the exhibition has remained the same as for the first date.

JO: How has the company coped with Covid-19? How was the ultrasonic nonwoven market affected by the pandemic?

We had a lot of business that had to do with the pandemic and have supplied ultrasonic equipment for more than 200 machines to produce masks.

JO: Since INDEX in 2017, what major developments has the company made?

KB: Our new entry with ultrasonic joining technology in the nonwovens segment will start this year. The decision to enter the nonwovens market was made in 2018.

JO: I understand the company is now placing a new focus on the continuous welding of nonwovens and other materials. How so?

KB: The intention is to become stronger in other activities in the ultrasonic business. MS was already a market leader in machines for plastics and in customised machines mainly for the automotive sector. With our knowledge in ultrasonics, servo drives and controls it was not hard to make the decision to step into the nonwovens market. With the new MS Competence Center in Ettlingen (Germany), MS is fulfilling the wish of many customers to expand its application portfolio to include continuous joining, embossing and perforating of nonwovens and sealing of packaging. MS is thus adding an innovative and specialised site, while maintaining a high level of vertical integration and support for all specialist areas, through its main site in Spaichingen (Germany). In two application laboratories and a measurement and analysis laboratory, tests, evaluations and optimisations of various welding tasks are just as much a part of this as the in-house production of engraving rollers through to complete systems.

JO: Finally, are you looking forward to in-person events again? What are you looking forward to most about INDEX20?

KB: In our opinion, personal events are indispensable. The direct contacts at the trade show and the accompanying intensive discussions are incredibly valuable and the anticipation is great.

The official launch of our new Nonwovens segment is what we are really looking forward to. And of course the personal contacts. We are looking forward to introducing MS as a new player in the market (even if some people of our team are old hands in the business).
