The global sublimation paper market grew by 7% in 2023, increasing sales to 1.9 billion sqm, according to new data from textile industry information provider WTiN.

WTiN’s latest data update focuses on 2023 and presents market forecasts to 2028. This article – focused on the coated paper market – is the first in a five-part series that will also examine paper consumption by weight, application, roll width and tackiness.

The sublimation printing process is only applicable to synthetic materials, such as polyester. The process can print onto blends too, but the polyester content must be high to achieve a quality finish.

Regional breakdown
Last year, 54% of the world’s sublimation paper was sold in Asia. Over the last decade, the region has dominated the sector because of offshoring and high demand for fast fashion. Just over 1 billion sqm of paper was consumed in Asia in 2023 and 66% of that was coated.

In contrast, sublimation paper sales in Europe slumped by 7% due to ongoing economic turmoil. Europe’s share of the global market is now just over a fifth with 408.4 million sqm. Three-quarters of all sublimation paper sold in the region was coated.
