The recent Future Fabrics Expo showcased next-generation materials for textiles and apparel.
The Future Fabrics Expo, founded in Switzerland by non-profit organisation The Sustainable Angle, returned to Magazine London to showcase the next generation of sustainable fabrics from 25 to 26 June. It featured more than 10,000 commercially available, responsibly produced textiles for fashion, footwear and home products. The materials were curated according to the Indicative Materials Guidelines – a set of criteria that recognise a brand’s positive action in one or more areas such as chemicals, water, energy, waste, biodiversity or traceability.
Having started in 2011, the Expo has expanded from a trade show to a hybrid as it also features a seminar series and knowledge hub to educate visitors about sustainability in the textiles and apparel industry. Discussing this transition, founder and director of The Sustainable Angle and the Future Fabrics Expo, Nina Marenzi, says: “In 2019, we really felt things gaining traction […] We shifted from just showcasing materials with a lowered environmental effect to trying to shift the conversation towards positive impacts on people and the planet.”
