WTiN’s week-long virtual conference, Textile & Apparel Circularity Week, sponsored by event partners Interloop and loopamid® from BASF explored circularity across the supply chain with four thematic days. These consisted of design and zero waste design principles; circular materials; circular production and technology within the textile mill and manufacturing facilities; textile-to-textile recycling; reverse logistics; policy, transparency and digital product passports (DPPs).
The event was attended by delegates from across the value chain, including sports and outdoorwear designers, material and sustainability specialists, apparel, sportswear and home textile manufacturers, technologists and recyclers, government representatives and policymakers.
DAY ONE
Day one of WTiN’s Textile & Apparel Circularity Week: Driving the future of circular textile manufacturing addressed designing for circularity (and circular materials).
The textiles & apparel industry faces an urgent mandate to transition from linear to circular models this decade. The sessions across the day spoke of how the industry will achieve circularity with the common theme that circularity is embedded at the start of a garment’s lifecycle, in the design process, and that collaboration is the only way to achieve this.
Designing out waste
The keynote presentation: ‘A climate-critical roadmap to circularity for the textiles & apparel industry’, saw Mark Sumner, programme lead for textiles of non-profit organisation WRAP outline a comprehensive roadmap for achieving sector-wide transition. WRAP found 92m tonnes of textile waste going to landfill or incineration, with this projected to increase 62% by 2030. Additionally, global apparel
