Taiwan's Getek develops value-added composite fabrics for applications spanning personal care, protective apparel and industrial filtration, combining performance and sustainability. WTiN speaks with the company to find out more.
WTiN: For readers who may be unfamiliar with Getek (GE Technology), could you introduce the company and explain how it has evolved into a provider of value-added fabric solutions spanning personal care through to industrial applications?
Judy Chen (JC), sales manager: Getek is a technology company that has obtained multiple international certifications, [that specialises] in chemical filters and personal care products because they are all related to fabric and combine fabric with different materials. Providing complete sustainable value-added fabric clean air solutions ranging from the high-tech semiconductor industry to consumer filter media.
WTiN: Getek's portfolio covers a broad range of end uses. What is the company's philosophy when developing specialised fabrics, and how do you identify emerging needs across such diverse markets?
JC: With our tech's filter media technology and the manufacturing capabilities of textile and apparel manufacturers, we can collaborate with different and emerging partners to develop novel and uniquely featured products, such as masks, protective clothing and isolation garments, to meet diverse market demands.
WTiN: Which flagship materials or technologies best represent Getek's capabilities today, and what differentiates them in an increasingly competitive functional textiles landscape?
JC: Leveraging our strong research and development capabilities and over a decade of technical expertise, we gradually become a supplier of high-quality and multi-functional filter media, such as filter media with activated carbon, to Taiwanese textile and apparel manufacturers, which could apply to produce masks, protective clothing, isolation garments and other end products, thereby enhancing the products' filtering efficiency and functionality and expanding into various markets like medical, industrial and daily life sectors.
WTiN: Consumers and industrial customers alike are demanding more from textile materials, whether in terms of comfort, protection, durability or sustainability. Which trends do you believe are having the greatest influence on product development today?
JC: From a manufacturing standpoint, the holy grail right now isn't just creating a trendy fabric – it's scalability. The real winners in product development are those who can integrate product development into mass production without sacrificing yield or breaking the bank. From our industrial customers, their demands are more like providing products that meet their requirements. Based on this viewpoint, the trend customers want the most will shape product development and depends on the location and application.
WTiN: Developing fabrics for both personal care and industrial applications requires balancing highly varied performance requirements. How does Getek approach innovation to ensure materials meet specific application needs while remaining scalable and commercially viable?
JC: Our strength [lies in] applying key materials shared in common-composite fabric products. The composite fabric products produced by GE Technology mainly consist of non-woven fabric and activated carbon. The non-woven fabric thickness ranges from 2mm to 10/15mm, and the weight of activated carbon varies from 100 to 1,300gsm. However, the specifications of the filter media are not limited. We can provide highly customised services according to customer requirements, forming a comprehensive service network along with consultation services. By evaluating customers' needs first and providing the required customised services later, the quality and quantity of products are improved in both directions.
WTiN: As textiles become increasingly engineered for multifunctionality, are you seeing greater interest in fabrics that combine multiple performance attributes, and how is Getek responding to this shift?
JC: Fabric products combine multiple performance attributes are always our core competitiveness. We have been able to further transform these materials into premium industrial products, also offer collaboration opportunities and services with our partners to responding the shift.
WTiN: Collaboration is often critical to bringing advanced materials to market. How does Getek work with brands, manufacturers and downstream partners to accelerate development and adoption of new textile solutions?
JC: Through long-term collaboration with major brands, we have cultivated exceptional research and manufacturing techniques. This enables the company to engage in technical cooperation with textile and apparel manufacturers, collectively innovating and improving processes and technologies related to filter media. This collaboration would lead to enhanced performance and manufacturing processes, resulting in more competitive end products.
WTiN: Taiwan has built a strong reputation as a hub for high-value textile innovation. From your perspective, what strengths does Taiwan offer material developers, and how do you see its role evolving within the global textile supply chain?
JC: “Manufacturing products through outstanding research and development and innovation capabilities” and “a rare complete production value chain in Taiwan” are two competitive advantages that enable GE Technology to play a consulting role, engaging in two-way communication with customers. We provide customers with the most suitable solutions or recommendations for their needs. This approach prevents customer losses or overlapping costs, setting them apart from companies that only produce products based on customer requirements.
WTiN: Looking ahead, which application areas or technological developments do you believe hold the greatest potential for value-added fabrics, and where do you see Getek focusing its efforts in the years to come?
JC: We are committed to innovation, research and the manufacturing of composite fabric products as filters by always optimising our technology, quality and enhancing production capacity for various application areas and technological developments. To catch up with the trend, we believe being sustainable and resilient is always the answer.
