The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added a dye and dye precursor chemical – pyrene – to its candidate list of substances of very high concern.
This means that the European Commission may in future require special authorisation for any use of this chemical in the European Union (EU) under the EU’s REACH chemical control legislation. ECHA has concluded that the chemical is persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, or even ‘very persistent and very bioaccumulative’ under certain circumstances.
Dye precursors that incorporate pyrene include pyranine and naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxylic acid. Pyrene-based dyes can be fluorescent and blue, for instance. The chemical was listed by ECHA on 15 January.
