Insight20 Nov 2017According to official figures provided by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, inventory value in the textile wearing apparel and clothing sector went up 3.8% YoY in September
In Pakistan, the cotton market feared a shortage in supply of quality cotton, leading to intense competition for existing bales in the market, and driving prices up steeply week-on-week. According to latest figures provided by the United States Department of Agriculture, however, the stock-use ratio is expected to rise, meaning a downward pressure in cotton supply in the long-term, as year-on-year gain in domestic production offsets the year-on-year drop in initial reserves in the country. Exports are expected to more than double year-on-year, tightening Pakistan’s trade deficit, while domestic demand is expected to expand 2.9% year-on-year. Even so, the tightening of cotton trade deficit year-on-year and drop in initial reserves was not enough to offset the year-on-year drop in production deficit. In China, prices dropped marginally week-on-week and rose 2.5% year-on-year. Over time, year-on-year growth in the price level of CCINDEX cotton has slowed, with prices having a stable trend since mid-September. According to figures provided by the USDA, the total supply of cotton is expected to fall year-on-year due to a year-on-year drop in initial reserves offsetting a gain in production and imports. Domestic demand is expected to rise, diverting cotton supply away from exports. A year-on-year drop in stock-use ratio shows long-term pressure towards higher price levels. India’s filament yarn production increased 4.5% year-on-year in 2017 up to August, according to provisional figures provided by India’s Office of Textile Apparel. A boost in polyester filament yarn production continued to offset the year-on-year drop in viscose and polypropylene filament yarn production. Nylon filament yarn production also contributed towards the year-on-year increase in total filament yarn production in India.
Prices6 Nov 2017Year-to-date (YTD) Indian yarn production dropped 1.1% year on year in 2017 up to August, according to provisional figures provided by India’s Office of Textile Commissioner. The year-on-year drop in cotton spun yarn production continued to offset the year-on-year gain in blended and 100% non-cotton yarns. Meanwhile, manmade staple fibre production in India dropped 0.5% year-on-year during the same period, as a drop-in polyester, acrylic and polypropylene staple fibres offset the year-on-year gain in viscose staple fibre production. The United States Department of Agriculture revised downwards the total supply of cotton in the US for the 2017/18 market year in October relative to forecasts made in September. Due to the impact of hurricanes Irma and Harvey, the USDA revised downwards the harvest area and productivity – which led to a downward revision in domestic production. On the demand side, exports were revised downwards by a larger amount than domestic consumption. Both trade and production surplus were revised downwards this market year.
Prices30 Oct 2017According to figures provided by China’s National Bureau of Statistics, the number of industrial enterprises associated with the textile industry – by August 2017 – increased marginally (0.2%) relative to the previous months but dropped 0.5% relative to the same month in the previous year. Meanwhile, growth in textile-related inventories slowed down, both in terms of month-on-month and year-on-year growth. China’s textile investment in fixed assets continued to be positive in 2017 up to August, relative to the same period the year before. Yarn production in China dropped marginally in the third quarter, both in terms of year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter growth. The year-to-date (YTD) year-on-year growth rate slowed down in 2017 up to September, to 2.3% from 4.3% in 2017 up to August. Cloth production in China also dropped in the third quarter, relative to the previous quarter and the same quarter the year before. The year-on-year change in accumulated cloth production increased 2.9% in 2017 up to September, from 4.2% in 2017 up to August.
Prices23 Oct 2017Both yarn and cloth production in China were still up in 2017 up to August, relative to the same period the year before. Accumulated yarn production increased 4.3% year-on-year, while year-to-date (YTD) cloth production increased at a slightly slower pace (4.2% year-on-year). Latest figures provided by the USDA show that Brazil’s expected 2017/18 cotton production and trade surplus were revised upwards in October, relative to expectations made in September. Upward revision in production surplus increased due to an upward revision in domestic production of cotton, as harvest area and expected yields were higher than previously expected. Cotton trade surplus widened as both exports and imports were revised upwards, due to the upward revision in exports being the larger. The upward revision in imports was steeper, but from a relatively lower base compared to exports. In India, expectation in cotton production and domestic demand remained stable, relative to expectations made in September. However, cotton imports and initial reserves were revised upwards in October, allowing expected supply to increase 0.9% relative to expectations made in September. Cotton demand was also revised upwards this market year, due to an upward revision in exports. Expected trade surplus for the 2017/18 market year increased, relative to the previous month.
Prices16 Oct 2017According to figures released by the United States Department of Agriculture, expected cotton supply and demand in Brazil was revised upwards for the 2017/18 market year in September, relative to expectations made in August. Expected supply increased due to higher than- expected domestic production and initial reserves, while an upward revision in demand was mostly supported by an upward revision in exports, as it was revised upwards at a faster pace (and larger amount) than domestic consumption. In the United States, cotton supply was revised upwards, due to an upward revision in domestic production offsetting a drop in estimated initial reserves. Like in Brazil, the upward revision in demand was driven by exports. In both Brazil and the United States, cotton production was driven by an upward revision in harvest area and expected productivity. Figures released by China’s National Bureau of Statistics show chemical and synthetic fibre production increased 4.4% and 2.9% year-on-year respectively in 2017 up to August. In India, according to provisional figures provided by Office of Textile Commissioner, staple fibre production dropped 3.1% in 2017 up to June, as the year-on-year drop in polyester staple fibre production continued to drag down the growth of total staple fibre production.
