Insight11 Mar 2015By now we’re all familiar with concept of ‘fair trade’ in the sourcing of commodities, as promoted by Fairtrade International, which introduced its certified cotton standard in 2005. But fair trade rules applied to practices in textile manufacturing are, on the face of it, less simple to formulate.
It’s not often these days that the textile industry receives high-level attention within the corridors of the European Union, so the participation of Commissioner Elżbieta Bieńkowska in a conference next month in Poland is an occasion worth noting.
Insight10 Mar 2015The public’s appetite for clothing with the personal touch has long been identified as a potential driver for the advance of digital technologies. The presumption that China is tied to long lead times, volume production and low added value is deeply ingrained. But perhaps it should not be a surprise. Where the West leads, Asia’s entrepreneurs are not usually far behind, especially if there are new commercial opportunities to be exploited.
Insight25 Feb 2015Colleges struggling to fund their digital-textile printing departments might take a leaf from the book or Iowa State University, in the USA. There, students have created their own collection of scarves, which are on sale in the university’s own bookshop – which, despite its name, carries a wide range of clothing and general merchandise, both in ‘bricks-and-mortar’ and online. These designs, selling for over $50 each, fund the fabrics, ink and other supplies consumed by the Digital Apparel Textile Studio. The venture was the idea of lecturer Christina Denekas, who studied digital textile printing for her Masters degree at Iowa State, before working in the apparel industry.
